Tru Earth Review Summary

Canadian laundry sheets manufacturer Tru Earth is relatively new to the market, but despite that, has garnered attention and good reviews in the short span of two years. Below is my detailed analysis of their Tru Earth Eco-Strips and wide range of available products.

Pros:

  • Tru Earth laundry detergent comes in an eco-friendly, plastic-free cardboard sleeve that ensures zero waste. It’s biodegradable and recyclable, unlike liquid or powder detergents that come in huge plastic packs or jugs.
  • The eco-strips are vegan. All ingredients are either plant-based or plant-derived and no animal-based ingredients are used in the manufacturing process. They also don’t test their products on animals and nor do any of their suppliers, making the products cruelty-free. If you’re seeking a vegan laundry detergent option, Tru Earth offers a conscientious choice aligned with ethical values.
  • Tru Earth claims that their lightweight, “smart” packaging reduces transportation fuel consumption and greenhouse emissions by a massive 94% of today’s leading brands!
  • Tru Earth laundry detergent’s low-sudsing formula works in all washing machines, including HE machines, and it works in either hot or cold water.
  • These eco-strips are easy to use, with zero spillage, mess, or detergent wastage. Simply remove a strip from the packaging, place it inside the washer, add clothes, and voilà!
  • Unlike some other competing products manufactured overseas, Tru Earth Eco-Strips are manufactured in British Columbia, Canada, under stringent health regulations.
  • The company offers free shipping and a 30-day money-back guarantee (excluding return shipping cost) if you’re not satisfied with the product.
  • Tru Earth strips are certified paraben-free, phosphate-free, chlorine bleach-free, and also free from added dyes and 1,4-dioxane.
  • When you subscribe to one of their products, Tru Earth donates 32 loads of laundry to frontline workers, food banks, and individuals experiencing economic hardship.
  • These detergent strips are not only eco-friendly and efficient, their convenient dimensions also save you a lot of space (8.7″ x 5.5″ x 0.8″).
  • These detergent strips have a shelf life of 3 years or 36 months, instead of 6–12 months, like other detergents.

Cons:

Despite their eco-friendliness and sustainability, Tru Earth products have a few drawbacks:

  • Tru Earth Eco-Strips are more expensive than other detergent sheets. A single pack of Tru Earth Eco-Strips costs $19.95 for just 32 loads, whereas with Earth Breeze Eco-Sheets, $20 gets you 60 loads.
  • These sheets have limited availability. Not sold in most brick and mortar stores, the easiest option is to purchase them through the Tru Earth website or Amazon. However, if you type your postal code into their website, they’ll tell you if any shops near you carry their products.
  • Despite the company’s claim of “eco-friendly” products, their eco-strips do contain polyvinyl alcohol, a petroleum derivative.

Who Should Use Tru Earth?

Tru Earth is for those eco-conscious customers who are wary of phosphate and plastic pollution and want to reduce global warming carbon emissions and promote a plastic-free environment in general.

Eco-strips are the best alternative for consumers who want to switch from their current liquid laundry detergent or powder detergent for health reasons (e.g., sensitive skin), limitations on space, or the eco-friendly nature of the product.

Who Shouldn’t Use Tru Earth?

Suppose you’re a budget-conscious consumer who’s content with your current choice of a traditional powder or liquid detergent, and you’re indifferent to the future of the planet and the restoration efforts underway. In that case, Tru Earth might not be the best option for you!

Overall

Tru Earth is supplementing the global shift to an earth-conscious and sustainable lifestyle by offering a hassle-free and eco-friendly alternative in the form of detergent strips, a switch from the traditional liquid laundry detergent and powder detergent of yesteryear. Apart from the fact that all Tru Earth strips are safe for the environment, they’re also safe for humans—they’re vegan, free of any harsh chemicals, and safe for use by people with allergies or sensitive skin.

Tru Earth Review

With consumers becoming more environmentally conscious, the switch from traditional laundry detergents to eco-friendly detergent strips has picked up the pace, and eco-strips such as Tru Earth are at the forefront. Their accompanying benefits appeal to more and more consumers.

Why Tru Earth Over Traditional Laundry Detergents?

Traditional laundry detergents are still widely used due to their affordable price and easy availability. However, many consumers have already shifted to brands like this one that offer convenience and a commitment to protecting the earth from pollution.

Tru Earth offers several benefits, including compostable and waste-free packaging instead of huge plastic jugs, in addition to convenient storage.

Their plant-based or plant-derived ingredients are skin- and environment-friendly, with different varieties to choose from.

Tru Earth claims that using their products helps keep 700 million plastic jugs out of landfills annually. If everyone switched to their product, it would be like taking 27 million automobiles off the road for a day, or planting nine million trees.

How Do These Laundry Strips Work?

Tru Earth laundry strips are pretty easy to use. For top-loader machines, take out one Tru Earth Eco-Strip or half a strip (depending on the size of the load), place it in the washing machine among the clothes, and you’re good to go!

However, when using a front-loading machine, put it in the dispenser, throw in the dirty clothes, and let the detergent strips do their work!

Rest assured, these eco-strips leave no mess or spillage behind.

My Tru Earth Review

Performance: 8.5/10

Tru Earth strips perform a fairly decent job removing stains and dirt from your laundry, just like traditional liquid laundry soap or powder, to give you clean, stain-free clothes. The notable difference is that these laundry sheets are also safe for sensitive skin and work in both hot and cold water and any washing machine (including HE machines).

The only reason they got an 8.5 is that some customers on Amazon complained about the product not working in front-load or HE washing machines. A few others complained that stains and body odor didn’t go away despite several attempts and cycles of washing.

Despite weighing a mere 3 grams (0.105 oz.), Tru Earth laundry detergent delivers a stain-busting performance similar to 40 grams (1.410 oz.) of powdered or liquid detergents (according to their website) while saving the planet.

Value: 7/10

These laundry sheets offer better value than today’s leading brand liquid detergents. They are phosphate-free and paraben-free. They’re 94% lighter in weight than a liquid or powder laundry detergent, causing zero mess or spillage since they don’t require measurement (each pre-measured Tru Earth Eco-Strip is sufficient for one load). Moreover, they produce zero waste (including plastic waste) and are a fantastic toxic-free laundry detergent choice.

So, if everything is so great, why a 7? Well, there’s more to this than meets the eye. To be precise, it’s the price!

These eco-strips are not only a bit pricier than traditional powder or liquid detergent, but also other competing detergent sheet brands. Take Earth Breeze, for example: their cost per load for a single purchase is $0.33, compared with Tru Earth’s considerable $0.62—almost double that of Earth Breeze.

The price goes down to $0.40 when you subscribe to their discount package. However, the gap remains the same when compared with Earth Breeze’s subscription price ($0.20 vs $0.40).

Product/Service Offerings: 9.5/10

I’m compelled to give them a 9.5 for their vast range of products, starting from the basic Tru Earth Eco-Strips laundry detergent sheet available in two varieties.

Next is the Tru Earth Eco-Strips laundry detergent sheet for babies, special, gentle strips for your baby’s clothes.

Last but not least, Tru Earth Eco-Strips Platinum laundry detergent sheets, available in both scented and unscented varieties, are designed to clean the dirtiest clothes and remove strong odors from activewear or sports apparel.

Apart from these, they offer a wide range of products ranging from grocery bags, snack bags, wool dryer balls, beeswax food wraps, bamboo cutlery, multi-surface cleaners, and Swedish dishcloths. And, of course, all these products are eco-friendly.

Customer Support: 6/10

Customer service is an area they need to work on, as there were some very strong, negative reviews online regarding their customer service. For example: “My account says that my order was delivered on November 19, 2020 . . . Multiple emails to customer service have gone unanswered. My order has had 3 delivery dates. I do not know if it will actually arrive,” shared one unhappy customer.

Ease of Use: 10/10

These eco-strips offer great utility in this department—no mess, no spillage, and no waste to deal with. Tear open the package, take out a strip or half a strip, and throw it in with your laundry. It can’t get simpler than this!

Another bonus is it works equally in front-loading, top-loading, and HE washing machines without any hassle, so full marks to the product in this department!

Overall Rating: 8.2/10

This product passes the wash test with flying colors. It has a wide range of products to suit the needs of different customers, their laundry strips are easy to use, and they help cut down on plastic pollution and reduce the overall carbon footprint. The downside is their product costs more than traditional powder liquid detergent.

Setting aside the price and some hiccups with their customer service team, these eco-strips are a good choice, especially for eco-conscious customers.

Other Tru Earth Reviews

Trust Pilot: 3.3/5

They have a pretty lackluster 3.3 rating out of 5 stars on Trustpilot. Of the nine reviews, four rated them with five stars—a rating of excellent— and were thoroughly satisfied with all aspects of the detergent sheets and dryer balls, including washing capabilities, ease of use/convenience factor, and customer service. One customer gave them four stars.

However, the remaining four customers gave them only one and two stars (ratings of bad and poor, respectively), complaining about the “pathetic” customer service.

Google My Business: 3.5/5

Tru Earth’s has an average 3.5 out of 5 rating on GMB. Out of 16 reviews, 10 customers gave them 5-stars and were very pleased with the eco-friendly nature of the product, whereas 6 gave them only one-star and weren’t pleased with their shipping, customer service and refund related matters.

Facebook: 4.6/5

The Tru Earth Facebook page has 1,612 reviews, with an overwhelming majority loving the laundry strips due to their plastic-free, no-waste design and small size, while others liked having the option of unscented strips. One customer review read: “Love no plastic in any packaging, [and] small strips clean an entire load. The fresh linen scent is strong but I also bought the no scent. Clothes are clean and smell great. Price is great and [I’m] doing my part for the environment. What’s not to like?”

Better Business Bureau (BBB): 4.49/5

The brand has 76 customer reviews on Better Business Bureau with a rating of 4.49 out of 5. Most of these customers were happy with the product performance and quality, and the company’s customer service. However, some did complain about issues with subscription and product shipments not being delivered reliably.

Tru Earth Website: 4.9/5

There are 17,380 product reviews on the website, with 90% (15,589) of the respondents giving the product five stars, and 10% (1782) giving four stars. There are no negative reviews on the website.

The credibility of these customer reviews available on the website is arguable. But if you can forget this, they are strong enough to compel someone to at least try them out!

In Summary:

Convincing a prospective customer to try out your product is a difficult task. It has to tick all the right boxes and offer good value for money. Tru Earth thankfully ticks almost all the right boxes. It comes in plastic-free packaging, produces zero waste, is phosphate-, paraben-, and dye-free, and saves space in your laundry room.

The tiny, pre-measured strip performs well at removing dirt, stains, and odors from your clothes. Beyond performance, eco-strips help you do your part to support environmental causes. Notably recognized as one of the best plastic-free laundry detergents, Tru Earth stands out for its commitment to sustainability. Apart from a few reported issues with customer service and their high price, it’s worth trying.

Keeping in mind the reviews from different websites, Tru Earth justifies its price through the plethora of benefits it offers, and I’m comfortable recommending them.
